Blossom's Day in the Sun

Writer's picture: Ariyana FAriyana F

Blossom the deer was having a great day. They had decided to go out on their own, just to have some peace and quiet with all of their pool toys. Blossom had always loved the color pink - of course, their antlers and spots were pink, and their long silky brown fur floated in the water as they enjoyed themself. They were wearing bright pink polka dotted water wings, a pink inflatable lifejacket, where they had clipped their favorite cherry blossom themed pacifier, a pink innertube complete with leg holes, and had their bright pink skimpy pink swimming suit on, though it did a pretty bad job at covering their large poofy girly diaper.

Blossom was terrible at swimming, though they had never revealed this fact to anyone before. They were scared of deep water, but always brought their pool toys with them to enjoy the lake. It was a huge part of their childhood, and they didn’t want to stop coming just because they never learned how to swim.

Blossom was a little excessive with their pool toys. They always brought many with them. Carrying them to the lake was a little dramatic, having to balance all of them on their shoulder as they tried to avoid anyone’s detection, but it was all worth it when they finally jumped inside, and became surrounded by all their favorites. Blossom didn’t want to leave anyone out, so they always brought every single one of their pool toys. Today, they brought with them a huge holo unicorn with a swirling yellow horn, a wolf with a large open mouth, which Blossom had always been a little frightened of, a green dragon that had a mountain of treasure surrounding it, as well as various other pool toys Blossom would be heartbroken if they lost.

The sun was shining down, and Blossom sighed in contentment, flapping their legs as they leaned back on their floatie. It seemed like nothing could possibly go wrong. It was an hour in when Blossom began falling sleeping, losing consciousness slowly under the beautiful summer breeze. They woke up at once by the sound of someone’s legs hitting the water. Blossom jumped, and looked up to see a wolf standing there, bigger than any of their floaties. It had long gray fur, sharp teeth, narrowed eyes, and a snarky expression on its face. Blossom immediately went to hide their diaper and pacifier. They had been made fun of before, and they definitely didn’t want this to ruin their perfect day.

“Um…. Hi.” Blossom said, trying to give the wolf their friendliest smile.

“Hello.” The wolf said, eyeing Blossom’s toys up and down. “I see you’ve also decided to enjoy the nice weather we’re having.” Blossom released his breath dramatically, the wolf seemed nice enough. He definitely had bad experiences with wolves before, but this one was just being friendly.

Blossom continued to hide their pacifier, holding it in their paw. Blossom’s diaper was in the water, so they hoped the wolf wasn’t looking that closely. “Yes, I come here a lot. I haven’t seen you here before though!” Blossom said with their usual cheerful attitude.

“No, this is my first time. My friend Purpy told me this was a really nice lake during the summer.” The wolf said.

“You know Purpy, too?” Blossom asked, intrigued. Purpy was their cat friend, a beautiful furry cat with long purple and violet stripes. Purpy had a lot of friends, so Blossom wasn’t too surprised.

“Small world.” The wolf swishes its tail against the water. “I’m Freddy, by the way.”

“Blossom.” They replied. “So how do you know Purpy?”

“He helped me with a bad situation, I’ll always be thankful for all he’s done for me.” He said.

Blossom nodded, wondering what it was. “Have you met his girlfriend?” They asked, curious.

“Yes. Once or twice. Why?” The wolf asked, and began sinking into the water. Blossom was scared he would dip his head in and see their diaper.

“Oh, she just kind of scares me.” Blossom blushed, he didn’t know if he should be saying that to a stranger. The wolf might decide to tell Purpy, and that wouldn’t be good for any of them.

“She scares you?” The wolf stopped swimming, looking at Blossom. “Why?”

“I don’t know. I’m scared of a lot of things.” Blossom admitted, still blushing furiously. They wondered if it was obvious over their brown fur.

“You shouldn’t just be scared of people without knowing them.” Freddy scolded.

“I can’t help but follow my gut! It’s always protected me!” Blossom insisted. They were getting a little frustrated at the wolf.

Freddy sighed, also looking a bit frustrated. “You can’t judge people based on appearances! How do you think I’d feel if you were scared of me because I was a wolf?”

“But you do look scary!” Blossom said, and immediately regretted it. They slammed their paw on their face, trying to cover their mouth, but it was too late.

The wolf narrowed his eyes, glaring. “Is that how you feel? Then I guess I should be a big bad wolf, huh?”

“No!” Blossom shouted. “I didn’t mean it like that!”

“Then how did you mean it?” Freddy continued to stand in the water, not moving an inch. It felt like he was going to pounce at any moment.

“I…” Blossom had no idea how to defend himself. He was always terrible at explaining.

“You can’t swim, can you?” Freddy said matter-of-factly. “That’s why you have to use all of those floaties.”

“No! I can totally swim. I just like using them!” Blossom lied.

Freddy grinned, like he had caught Blossom in his trap. “Then why don’t you get out of there and come swim with me?”

“It’s supposed to be a nice peaceful day, I’m just not planning on swimming!” Blossom lied once more.

“Not even to swim with a friend?” Freddy continued. “I might have to tell Purpy…” Blossom felt like he was going to cry, but composed himself. “And why do you have so many of them? Even if you couldn’t swim, wouldn’t one floatie be enough?”

“But the other ones will be left out…” Blossom said, and immediately wanted to take it back again.

The wolf barked out a loud laugh. “The other ones will be left out?! Did you just imply your pool floaties have feelings? You’re rude to a real life wolf, and you’re kind to inanimate objects?”

“They’re not inanimate to me! I’ve named all of them.” Blossom explained. He pointed to the unicorn, the biggest one out of all of them. “That one’s called Sasha!”

“Sasha, hmm? I wonder what would happen if Sasha… popped.” Freddy winked.

“You wouldn’t!” Blossom exclaimed.

“Also, what’s that in your palm, hmm?” Freddy seemed to be purring the words out.

Blossom hadn’t noticed, but he had exposed his pacifier to Freddy when he had covered his mouth in shock. Now, the pacifier was clearly visible on top of his paws. “Nothing.”

Blossom said, trying to hide it. It was too late, though, the wolf clearly had superior vision, because he said, “Is that a pacifier, perchance?”

“Um…” Blossom didn’t know how to lie at this point. There was nothing else it could possibly be.

“It’s cute. It matches your whole ensemble.”

“Really?” Blossom asked, feeling a little perked up by the compliment.

“No! What kind of grown up uses a pacifier for goodness sakes?!”

Blossom pouted. “That was so mean.”

“So was calling me a scary looking guy!” The wolf sank most of his body under the water again, and began floating backwards, showing off his swimming skills. It was definitely far better than Blossom, who didn’t know how to swim at all. They had tried to take swimming lessons in the past, but as soon as they approached the deep end, their body would seize up, and they wouldn’t be able to walk a single step further. They would eventually quit the class, and spend most of their time in the kiddie side instead. They weren’t going to tell the wolf that, though.

“I use it for anxiety. It’s totally a thing that people do!” Blossom said, finally thinking up a good reason.

“Sure. Uh-huh.” The wolf teased. Blossom was getting sick and tired of this! This was not how they imagined their perfect lake day, and they just wanted the wolf to leave and leave them alone!

Blossom hadn’t realized the wolf had swam close to him, and was lapping around him in circles like some sort of shark. Freddy began scratching his ears, his claws clearly gleaming under the sunlight. Blossom couldn’t help but stare at it, watching as it floated by him. All of a sudden, Blossom heard a pop, and saw that the wolf had pierced its claw into the dragon pool toy. Blossom gasped. “What have you done! Flamey!” They watched in horror as the large dragon and his treasure hoard deflated, the sound of the air flying out of the floatie the only thing Blossom could hear over the lapping waves.

“Oops, I always forget how sharp my claws are.” Freddy said.

“No you didn’t! You did that on purpose!” Blossom exclaimed, wanting to stamp their hooves in horror. They wanted to charge at the wolf for being so cruel, but they were still in the water, unable to go anywhere except struggle to the shore - which they had wanted to do at the end of the day without an audience.

“Maybe I just didn’t like the appearance of the dragon.” Freddy said. “It was too ferocious for me.” Blossom knew Freddy was teasing them about their regular habit of judging someone at first sight, but this didn’t make it right!

“I can’t believe you brought so many with you, a small deer like you.” Freddy commented. Blossom ignored him, hoping that he would just go away if they stopped talking to them.

Blossom had lost contact with Freddy for only a second, and realized at once that they could no longer see him. Where did he go? Blossom was about to start swimming to shore when he heard another ‘POP’. Blossom gasped, and watched in horror as another floatie began losing air as well, this time the wolf with the snarling mouth. “Ted!” Blossom cried out, already feeling like tears were going to fall out. The wolf’s head appeared right next to Ted, his tooth sharp as a knife.

“Oh no! It seems I pierced your inflatable wolf with one of my sharp teeth!” Freddy said, clearly being sarcastic.

Blossom had been teased by their friends before, but never to this extent! They didn’t even know where most of the pool toys came from, since they had gotten them mostly as presents. They would never have the same collection again! This was horrifying. “I’ve had enough of this, Freddy. You’re being mean, and I don’t like mean people!” Blossom humphed, crossing their arms in anger. Blossom began kicking the water the way they knew best, trying to get to shore. Unfortunately, Freddy swam like he was a seal, and was way faster than Blossom without even trying. Blossom looked like a flailing child, trying to get anywhere away from Freddy.

Freddy’s head popped up again, completely matted against his face as he spit some water out dramatically. “Are you trying to get back to shore? Because that is definitely not how you’re supposed to swim.” Now he was teasing Blossom about their swimming? This wolf was never going to stop!

“I know perfectly well how to swim! I don’t need your advice!” Blossom said, and began kicking across the water again in the slowest pace possible. The wolf lapped around them three times before they even moved a single feet. Even worse, Blossom was trying to carry their last pool toy with them, their unicorn. There was no way they were going to let the mean wolf get to Sasha. They were getting closer and closer to the shore when suddenly, the wolf’s head popped up again out of nowhere.

“Boo!” Freddy said.

“Ahh!” Blossom yelled, practically jumping out of the water. Blossom released their favorite unicorn from the shock of it, and Freddy took his chance.

He jumped on top of the unicorn yelling, “oh since you’re not using Sasha, can I use her?”

“NO!” Blossom exclaimed, but once again, it was too late. Freddy had jumped on top of Sasha, and pierced all of his claws deep inside of her. She floated even faster than the other toys had, her body now completely filled with holes. Blossom had no words to say as they watched Freddy lay on top of Sasha as she became flatter and flatter, her body disappearing as Blossom watched in horror. When most of the air disappeared, Freddy jumped off of Sasha and back into the water, purposefully splashing Blossom on their face. Blossom was now completely soaked, and had to watch their toy float down the lake, disappearing from sight.

“You’re a big fat meanie!” Blossom yelled.

“Wow, do you really think it’s going to be better if you call me even more names?” Freddy teased, now floating on his back again.

“I don’t care. What else can you do to me now, huh?” Blossom was really angry now. Sasha was their absolute favorite!

Freddy stopped floating, his eyes narrowing on Blossom’s pink water wings, lifejacket, and innertube. Blossom couldn’t believe it. The wolf was trying to kill them!

Blossom was frantic now, they needed to swim back to shore for their safety! They began kicking faster, trying desperately to get back. Why had they floated so far out in the first place?! They were enjoying the lake way too much! Freddy got close to them again, his teeth gleaming even greater than before, his approached like a shark, only his snout and ears perking up above the water. Blossom began moving backwards, having nowhere else to paddle. They gasped, and were moved further and further backwards. “No, no. I’ll be good. You’re not a mean wolf, just leave me alone!” The wolf kept approaching though, and Blossom just kept being pushed. Eventually, they reached a corner of the lake, and were absolutely flabbergasted when they heard another ‘POP’! But it wasn’t the wolf this time, it was their own doing. The wolf had cornered them so much into the lake that they had somehow popped their own innertube against a long branch sticking out of a tree.

“No, no, no!” Blossom cried out as their tube began deflating around them. It was no use, the hole was just too large. Why hadn’t they noticed this was happening?! The wolf’s grin became even wider. “You did this on purpose!” Blossom realized at once.

The wolf shook his head, like he was the most innocent being in the world. “Me? No. I’d never do such a thing. Accidents just happen.”

“You did!” Blossom had to focus on their own perils though, because the tub was deflating fast, and they had to get out of it before it was too late. Blossom pushed against it, trying to remove themselves without flashing their giant poofy diaper at the wolf. They would definitely be made fun of for wearing that now. They managed to finally get out, their legs popping one by one as they splashed backwards into the water. Blossom flailed and gasped, though their lifejacket and water wings kept them afloat. Blossom was now even more soaked than before, and it was making them frustrated. They hadn’t planned on getting completely wet that day!

“Look at your fur all matted against you, so embarrassing!” The wolf laughed loudly, his deep voice echoing through the lake.

“Hmph!” Was all Blossom managed to say. Thankfully, it was now easier for them to get to shore, since they didn’t have so many floaties forcing their body up. This time, they’d definitely be able to get away from the wolf.

“Wait, before you go, can I just check something?” The wolf asked, sounding innocent again.

“Check what?” Blossom kept going, though was slightly curious. They didn’t want to be fooled this time.

“How sharp are your antlers, hmm?” The wolf asked.

Blossom gasped. “You shouldn’t ask a deer such things!”

“Why? Is it more impressive to have sharp antlers?” The wolf genuinely sounded curious.

“I don’t need to answer to a bully like you!” Blossom scolded, and kept waddling. Suddenly, the wolf appeared beside them, and pulled their right waterwing out from their arm. “NO!” Blossom yelled. Before they could do anything, the wolf slammed the water wing on top of Blossom’s right antler. The water wing made another loud ‘POP’ and began losing air rapidly, just like the rest of them.

“Wow, pretty impressive.” The wolf swam to the left, and did the same thing to Blossom’s left waterwing. Another ‘POP’ echoed, and Blossom would feel their tears now. This was just too much. They only had their life jacket left! They had brought so many fun toys to play with, and so many layers of protection, and this bad wolf was ruining all of it!

Without the water wings, Blossom’s butt was now floating behind them as they swam, even faster now, but Blossom knew exactly what was coming.

“Is that… are you wearing diapers?” The wolf accented the last word like it was the most embarrassing thing in the world.

“DON’T LOOK AT THEM!” Blossom cried out, their worst fear coming to life. “DON’T LOOK!”

“I can’t help but look! Oh my, why does a grown deer like you need diapers?” The wolf tsked.

“It’s none of your business!” Blossom said. “Now, you’ve already ruined my entire day. No, entire year! Just leave!”

“But I still have one more thing to pop!” The wolf said, eyeing up the life jacket now.

“No, if you do that, I’ll die!” Blossom exclaimed.

“I thought you said you knew how to swim, little deer?” The wolf tsked. “You wouldn’t be judgemental and a liar, would you?”

“I…” Blossom’s mood immediately shifted from anger and worry to embarrassment and shame. “I may have twisted the truth a little bit.”

“Why don’t you stay longer, and I’ll teach you how to swim?” The wolf gave him a sly smile.

“I don’t want to spend a second longer with you!” Blossom said, and tried to cover their diaper, but it was no use, their butt kept wanting to float in the water. It didn’t matter anymore, the wolf had already seen it. It was best to just leave. Blossom was already so close. They waddled, not even trying to see where the wolf was anymore. It hadn’t worked all the other times before. I’m going to get home, and forget about all of this!

They were almost at standing height when instead of a pop, they heard an enormous ripping noise. They looked down to see the wolf on their right, with his claws extended. They had ripped Blossom’s beautiful swimming trunks in pieces! Blossom gasped, they were now practically completely naked in the lake, with only diapers on! The wolf emerged again, and laughed out loud. He laughed for so long, his belly was shaking from it, and tears emerged from his eyes. “I wanted to see the whole thing, and wow is it embarrassing! Look at how puffy and large it is!”

Blossom burst out in tears, unable to help themselves. “I… I can’t believe… you’re so… this is just so….” They couldn’t get any words out anymore. What was the point! The wolf was just going to keep making fun of them, he was having too much fun doing so!

They stopped swimming all together. They didn’t want to get out and have everyone see their inflated diapers. Instead of going easy on them though, the wolf had one final task to do - the life jacket. He swam right in front of Blossom, extended a claw, and ripped the life jacket from the base to the top one clip at a time. It was no use. The life jacket was torn apart just like everything else. Blossom let it go with a defeated gasp, and began sinking into the water.

They were shocked when they felt strong arms grasp their sides and lift them up, bringing them the rest of the way to shore. It was so quick, and they began breathing again almost instantly. They landed on the dry grass, and looked up to see a smiling wolf’s face looking down at them.

“Well, you’ve just got your diaper left now. Good luck walking all the way back in those.” The wolf chuckled.

“You’ve completely ruined everything.” Blossom whined, still wanting to cry but feeling completely defeated.

“I know, and I had fun being the big bad wolf every step of the way. It was good to prove you right.” The wolf winked, and walked off, sauntering and swaying his body like he had done a wonderful thing.

“I hate wolves!” Blossom exclaimed, not learning his lesson at all.
